YOUTH BUILD AMERICORPS

Shaping the Leaders of Tomorrow

The New Directions YouthBuild/ AmeriCorps Partnership is a comprehensive youth development program that offers HSE prep, job training, counseling and leadership development for out-of-school youths ages 16-24, through the construction and rehabilitation of affordable housing in their neighborhoods. Participants pursue careers in construction, computer technology or health care. YouthBuild students are also members of AmeriCorps, a national service organization and Rotaract, a youth service program sponsored by Rotary International. Our trainees learn valuable skills that enable them to begin successful lives as young adults.

GARDENING PROJECT

Making a Difference One Plant at a Time

Thanks to our Mayor, and the City of Poughkeepsie Nubian Directions has been privileged to maintain and beautify flower gardens and planters owned by the City for the last 11yrs.  To accomplish this, we employ a gardening program coordinator, and 8 to 10 Poughkeepsie youth to beautify the approximately 21 gardens situated in and around the City of Poughkeepsie.  We engage youth workers in activities such as planting, weeding, watering, and trellising.  In addition to garden maintenance, they participate in activities that develop leadership and relationship skills.

POUGHKEEPSIE COMMUNITY WIFI PROJECT

Building a Better Future

During the last year, the City of Poughkeepsie has felt the direct impact of COVID-19. Social distancing, unemployment, school closure, community spread  and various stay at home orders/practices have resulted in socio-economic hardships on children and families.

Many residents, employers, and students must rely on high speed broadband in nearly every aspect of their lives. For a number of low-income residents, they do not have access to online educational resources, census forms/information, and/or updated COVID-19 information.  According to the U.S. Census, approximately 25% of the City of Poughkeepsie’s households in the 3rd and 5th Wards specifically, lack internet access. This means, a significant portion of Poughkeepsie City School District’s low-income children/students do not have access to the internet.

In order to address this community need and develop a workable solution to this stated problem, Nubian Directions has moved forward in designing/implementing a strategic plan to provide free Wi-Fi access to the “unconnected” in the City of Poughkeepsie..
